제인님의 영어원문 스토리를 리처드가 옮겼습니다.
이 글은 따뜻한 이야기방에 올리는 것이 맞을텐데
원문이 갤러리에 있으니 어찌할가 망서렸습니다.
어디선가 읽은 느낌도 들지만 Story 전개를 따라가다 보니
문득 느낌이 왔습니다.
도움이 절실한 사람에게 도움의 손길을 주는 것은
아름다운 일이며, 자기가 배푼 그 도움은 멀리 가지않고
바로 자신에게 돌아온다는 것이
[하나님의 섭리, God's Providence] 라는군요
긴 문장을 짧게 끈어 읽기 쉽도록 하였습니다.
"사랑은 돌고 돈다."
어느날 한 사내가 길가에 붙박혀 있는 한 노부인을 만났다.
어둡고 칙칙한 날, 한눈에 보아도 그녀는 도움이 필요하다는 것을 알수있었다.
그래서 그 사내는 그녀의 메르세데스 밴츠앞에 차를 세우고 내려섰다.
그가 그녀에게 다가갈때 그의 폰티악 고물차에선 여전히 털털거리는 소리가 났다
비록 사내의 얼굴은 웃고 있었지만 그녀는 겁이났다.
지나간 한시간 내내 아무도 길을 멈추고 도와주는 사람이 없었다
나를 해치지나 않을까? 그녀의 눈에는 남루한 차림에 배가고파 보이는
그 사내가 위험해 보였다.
그는 추위에 떨고 서있는 그녀가 겁에 질려있다는 것을 알았다.
그는 그녀의 감정을 이해했다. 누군들 이 쌀쌀한 날, 날은 저무는데
이런 외진 곳에 떨며 서있어 보면 왜 두려움이 몰려오지 않겠는가
저는 부인을 돕기위해 차를 세웠습니다. 추운데 따뜻한 차 안에 들어가 계시지요
제 이름은 브라이언 엔더슨입니다. 라고 말하며 사내는 부인을 안심시켰다.
그녀가 당면한 문제는 차의 타이어가 펑크난 것 뿐이었다.
그러나 노부인에겐 그것 만으로도 크나큰 불행이었다.
브라이언은 차밑으로 기어들어가 차를 들어올리는 공구를 찾아보았다.
그의 손가락 마디 몇군데 긁혀 상처가 나고 옷이 더렵혀 졌지만
금방 타이어를 갈아 끼울수가 있었다. 볼트를 조이고 마무리를 할 때
부인은 차유리를 내리고 그에게 말을 시작했다
자기는 센트루이스에 살며 이곳은 지나가는 길이었다고
도와주어서 얼마나 감사한지 말로 다할수 없다고 ..
라이언은 트렁크를 닫으면서 미소만 지었다.
부인은 사례금으로 얼마를 주면 되겠느냐고 물었다.
그녀는 얼마라도 줄 여유가 있었다.
그가 가던 길을 멈추고 도와주지 않았더라면 어떤 끔찍한 일을 당했을지를
그녀는 상상해 보았다.
브라이언은 도움의 대가로 돈을 받는다는 것을 한번도 생각해보지 않았다.
그건 그의 스타일이 아니었다. 곤경에 처한 누군가를 도와주는 일은 당연한 일
과거에 그에게 도움을 준 사람이 어디 한 둘 이었던가?
다른사람은 몰라도 하나님은 아실꺼야
그는 지금까지 평생을 다른사람의 도움을 받고 살았지만 그가 남을 도울 일은
한번도 그에게 일어나지 않았다.
그는 말했다. 정말로 돈을 지불하기를 원하시면
이 다음에 곤경에 처한 누군가를 만나시면 그 사람들에게
필요한 도움을 주시면 되지않겠느냐고 ...
브라이언은 덧붙여 말했다. '그때 저를 기억해 주십시오.'
그는 부인이 차의 시동을 걸고 멀어져 갈 때 까지 바라 보았다.
내내 춥고도 우울한 날들이었지만 브라이언은 기분이 좋았다.
그는 집을 향해 황혼속으로 사라져 갔다.
노부인은 몇마일 차를 달리다가 한 조그마한 까페를 보았다.
집으로 가는 여행 마지막 구간에서 ...
그녀는 그곳으로 들어가 한입 요기를 하고 추위를 내려 놓았다.
우중충해 보이는 식당 밖으로는 두 곳의 낡은 주유펌프가 보였다.
그 모든 장면이 그녀에게는 생소하였다.
여종업원이 그녀에게 다가와 머리를 닦으라고 깨끗한 타월을 내밀었다.
그녀는 상냥하게 미소짓고 있었다. 비록 하루종일 서서 일을 해야 하지만
그녀의 얼굴에서 미소가 사라지게 할수는 없었다.
그녀가 만삭의 임신부라는 것을 그 부인은 짐작할 수 있었다.
그러나 그녀는 그 모든 긴장과 고통속에서도 평상심을 잃지 않았다.
노부인은 의아했다. 어떻게 저처럼 가진것 없는 사람이
낯모르는 길손에게 이다지도 상냥할 수 있단 말인가.
그러자 브라이언의 모습이 떠올랐다.
그 부인은 식사를 마치고 그녀에게 백달러 지폐를 건네었다.
여종업원은 재빨리 백달러의 거스럼을 가지러 갔다.
노부인은 문 밖으로 미끄러지듯 사라졌다.
여종업원이 거스럼을 가지고 돌아왔을 때, 부인은 떠나고 없었다.
부인이 어디에 갔는지 의아해 할때 그녀는 냅킨위에 쓴 글을 발견했다.
부인이 남긴 글을 읽고 그녀는 눈물을 흘렸다.
'빚졌다고 부담갖지 말아요. 나도 빚을 졌으니 사정을 알지요.
누군가 전에 나를 도와준 것처럼, 나도 당신을 돕고 싶었어요.
당신이 정말 나에게 빚을 갚고 싶다면, 이걸 명심하세요
'이 사랑의 줄을 당신에게서 끊어지게 하지 마세요.'
넵킨 아래에는 백달러 지폐 네장이 더 있었다.
그래요. 치워야 할 식탁, 다시 채워야 할 설탕그릇, 시중들어야 할 손님들이
줄을 서도 그녀는 내일도 모래도 그 일을 해쳐나갈 것이다.
그날 밤 그녀가 퇴근하여 집에 와서 잠자리에 들자
그 돈에 대해서, 그리고 그 부인이 남긴 글을 곰곰히 생각했다.
그 부인이 어떻게 알았을까?
그들 부부가 얼마나 그 돈이 필요한 가를 ...
다음 달은 출산을 해야 하고, 많은 어려운 일이 닥칠 것이다.
남편이 얼마나 걱정을 하고 있는지 그녀는 너무도 잘 알고 있었다.
그녀 옆에 누워 잠든 남편에게 부드럽게 키스하면서 나즉히 속삭였다.
'모든 일이 잘될거에요. 사랑해요. 나의 여보, 브라이언 엔더슨.'
옛 속담에 이르기를, '사랑은 돌고 돈다.' 고 하였지요

One day a man saw an old lady, stranded on the side of the road,
but even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help.
So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out.
His Pontiac was still sputtering when he approached her.
Even with the smile on his face, she was worried.
No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so.
Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look safe; he looked poor and hungry.
He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt.
It was that chill which only fear can put in you.
He said, 'I'm here to help you, ma'am. Why don't you wait in the car where it's warm?
By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson.'
Well, all she had was a flat tire,
but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack,
skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his
hands hurt.
As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down the window and began to talk to him.
She told him that she was from St. Louis and was only just passing through.
She couldn't thank him enough for coming to her aid.
Bryan just smiled as he closed her trunk. The lady asked how much she owed him.
Any amount would have been all right with her.
She already imagined all the awful things that could have happened had he not stopped.
Bryan never thought twice about being paid.
This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were plenty,
who had given him a hand in the past.
He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way.
He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help,
she could give that person the assistance they needed, and Bryan added, 'And think of me.'
He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day,
but he felt good as he headed for home, disappearing into the twilight.
A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe.
She went in to grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home.
It was a dingy looking restaurant. Outside were two old gas pumps. The whole scene was unfamiliar to her.
The waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair.
She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn't erase.
The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant,
but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. The old lady wondered how someone who had
so little could be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Bryan.
After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a hundred dollar bill.
The waitress quickly went to get change for her hundred dollar bill, but the old lady had slipped right out
the door.
She was gone by the time the waitress came back. The waitress wondered where the lady could be.
Then she noticed something written on the napkin.
There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote: 'You don't owe me anything. I have
been there too. Somebody once helped me out, the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back,
here is what you do: Do not let this chain of love end with you.'
Under the napkin were four more $100 bills.
Well, there were tables to clear, sugar bowls to fill, and people to serve, but the waitress made it through
another day.
That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money
and what the lady had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her husband needed it?
With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard....
She knew how worried her husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss
and whispered soft and low, 'Everything's going to be all right. I love you, Bryan Anderson.'
There is an old saying 'What goes around comes around.'
Today I sent you this story, and I'm asking you to pass it on. Let this light shine.

친절하고 상냥한 부부라서 복을 받는 것이 아닌가 생각도 되고,
늘 뭔가 부족하다 느끼며 살아온 지난날,

어느 틈엔가 타성이라는 것이 발동하는 듯,
