영화 "사랑과 영혼을 찾아(somewhere in time)"
1972년 대학을 졸업하고 극작가로 활동중인 리차드 콜리어(크리스토퍼 리브 역)는
어느 날, 한 老婦人으로부터 금장(金裝) 회중시계(pocket watch)를 전해받으며,
"나에게 돌아와 주세요(Come back to me)" 라는 요청을 받게되고...
그 뒤로부터 8년 후, 1980년 그는 원고작업을 위해 미시건(Michigan) 호수의
작은 섬(매키넥. Mackinac Island)을 찾아가, 그곳 호텔(Grand Hotel)의
역사관(歷史官)에서 벽에 걸린 미모의 여인 초상화를 발견한다.
아름다운 젊은 여인의 사진을 보는 순간 한 눈에 반했으며,
그녀의 기록을 찾는 과정에서 오래전에 그녀를 만난적이 있음을 기억해낸다.
사진 속 여인은 1900년대 유명한 연극배우 엘리스 맥케나(제인 세이모어 역)
그러나 그녀는 이미 8년전에 세상을 떠나고 없는 사람이었다.
리차드는 그 여인이 바로 금시계를 준 노부인 이었다는 것을 알게된다.
미모의 젊은 여인에 대한 간절한 그리움으로, 1912년으로 되돌아 가고자 하는
리차드 콜리어는 심령학자의 도움을 받게된다.
하여. 시간여행으로, 1912년 6월 27일 공연관계로 호텔에 머물고 있는 그녀를 만난다.
그녀는 한 눈에 알아보고 "당신인가요(Is it you?)"라고 묻는다.
그러나 그는 단 한 순간이라도 가지고 있어서는 안되는 모순된 동전(1979년 발행)을
소지하고 있었던 것이다.
유명한 배우이자 아름다운 여인인 그녀를 옛 호텔에서 간신히 만나고,
마침내 뜨거운 사랑을 하게 되나, 그 동전 하나 때문에 현실로 돌아와버린다.
아무 의미없이 누리는 짧은 시간이 어느 누군가에게는
평생 간직할 수 있는 사랑이란 의미를 던져주고 있다.
