Thou on whose stream, 'mid the steep sky's commotion,

Loose clouds like earth's decaying leaves are shed,

If I were a dead leaf thou mightest bear(내가 너에게 휘날리는 마른 낙엽이라면)
If I were a swift cloud to fly with thee(내가 너와 날 수 있는 빠른 구름이라면)
A wave to pant beneath thy power, and share(오 통제 불능자여, 내가 너보다 덜 자유로울 뿐)

Aaron Copland (1900-1990)
found his distinctively American style
while studying composition
with Nadia Boulanger in Paris in the early 1920s.
Although Copland is known for his orchestral scores,
his setting of 12 Poems of Emily Dickinson is among
the most important 20th century American art songs.
Coplands interpretation of Dickinson's poems perfectly
parallels the poems thematic elements, including nature,
with a folk-like musical setting.
He captures Dickinson's lyrical expressivity and
the natural inflection of text with a marriage between
the vocal melody and piano harmony.
The three selections in this program are examples
of these techniques; sporadic key changes,
somber accompaniment,
and imitation.
