Vagina

"Even today, a study of dictionary definitions of “vagina” reveals that the organ is seldom described in relation to sex (unlike the penis), but overwhelmingly in terms of its physical location. Similarly, while “penis” is almost always described as an organ, the vagina is not; it is pictured as a “canal” or a “passage” that by implication leads somewhere else. Moreover the clitoris is often missing from those dictionaries; where it has been included that is principally in relation to the penis."

 

 

 

 

Loneliness

In the 21st century we are all apparently lonelier than ever, despite the connectedness promised by the digital revolution. Loneliness is seen as a modern epidemic, one which risks our physical and mental health. In my forthcoming book on loneliness, to be published by Oxford University Press in 2018, I offer a radically new interpretation of loneliness and its meanings in history and the present. This work connects with the theme of digital culture, and the ways we make

and remake social relationships. 

 

 

 

 

FACE

In the age of the selfie, looks are everything. Which is one of the reasons why self-esteem is at an all-time low - not only for women and young girls but increasingly for men. My work on the meanings of appearance and identity centres on the significance and history of the human face and the aesthetics of beauty and disfigurement. I have written articles on the history and ethics of cosmetic surgery, managed the Wellcome Trust's Medical Humanities Ethics panel and advised the Nuffield Council on Bioethics.-   I am now working on a major new project about the history and ethics of facial disfigurement and surgery - one that will raise key questions about appearance, gender and the limits of science in the 21st century.

Phelps Gate - Symbolic Entrance into Yale Campus.

Here's a link to Yale's website where you can read more if interested!   Knowing we can't possibly remember details about every place we visit, we try to take away one thing from each place that was new and interesting.  For both of us, the concept of Residential Colleges was something we found unique.  Before an incoming freshman arrives at Yale, they are assigned to one of 12 Residential Colleges where they will live, eat, play, etc for the four years they are at Yale. 

 

 

 

 

Just inside Phelps Gate is the original enclosed "old campus." 

The building to the left (Connecticut Hall) is the only original structure still standing exactly as it was built. 

The statue near that building is of  Nathan Hale (1773 Yale grad) who lived in this building as a student. 

It now houses the English Department.

 

 

 

 

 

The trademark and probably most recognizable symbol of Yale is this Carillon Tower.

One of my vintage quilts

We made a trip to our storage unit yesterday for some of our rugs and I came across one of my vintage quilts.

I have a number of other quilts in storage, but this is the only one I was able to liberate yesterday.

 

 

Favor by Osmosis

 

It's all in who you know.  Right?  That's what the world tells us anyway.  It pays to have friends in high places.   Nothing like getting VIP treatment or scoring some hard to get tickets all because you know someone.  Or, how about when you are connecting two people?  You talk about asking one person to do you a favor in order to benefit the other person.  Networking.  Cashing in favors.
